UNL ROTC cadets earn military commissions

Twenty-five ROTC students at UNL are celebrating. Not only did they graduate college, they also received their military commissions.
Several branches of the military including the Army, Air force, Navy and Marines are represented in this semesters graduating ROTC class. Salem Carlson is one of the newest Air Force officers. She’s following in her families footsteps being in the military.
"Both of my grandpa’s were in Vietnam. One actually went to Vietnam, my other grandfather was in army intelligence in Panama, so that’s where I get the intelligence from," Carlson says.
Aya Hinz also answered the call to serve because of people she admires.
"My grandfather served in World War II," Hinz says. "My father and my brother and I have some cousins and uncles that also served."
Take a look at some of the 25 UNL ROTC cadets who received their military commissions. Although they’ve earned their degrees, they’re not wasting anytime continuing to learn.
"I’m going to move in two days," Carlson says. "I’m going to take all my stuff in my car and head down to Texas for intelligence training."
"Right now I’m heading to my ship in japan and I’m going to earn my SWO Pin, and then in the future I’ll be going to nuclear office school," Hinz says.
Serving our country in the different branches of the military is not easy work, but the military leaders at UNL and these graduates say joining ROTC is one of the best decisions you can make.
"Definitely it’s a rewarding program for young men and woman out there that have a call to service," says U.S Navy Commander Larry Henke.
